This low-growing perennial can smell rather foul and is found anywhere from woodland rides and hedgerows to grassy areas and wasteland. It can be tinged with dark purple which produces a striking contrast with its delicate, pale violet flowers. As an early flowering plant, it is popular amongst pollinators, especially bees.
