Great Wood-rush

Luzula sylvatica

This rhizomatous, evergreen perennial rush is the tallest of the wood rushes and can carpet the ground. It is commonly found on acidic, moisture retentive soils and is seen in shaded woodlands and heathland, though it does not tolerate grazing. It has flat, glossy green leaves with fine white marginal hairs. It produces small brown flowers that often droop from their wiry, branched stems.
