This rhizomatous perennial rush is found near water?s edge, marshland and wet meadows. It is often confused with juncus articulatus, and can easily hybridise, but it is generally taller and produces more vigorous rhizome formations. It has a singular stem leaf and produces small clusters of brownish purple flowerheads on branched stems.
