This tussocky, deciduous perennial grass thrives in wet, acidic soils and can be seen on moorland, wet heathland and some woodlands. It has very narrow leaves and produces narrow flowerheads that have a deep purple tinge. Due to its deciduous nature, after flowering it turns to a soft beige or brown which can cover certain landscapes.
