This tufted perennial grass forms very dense clumps and is typically found on wet, acidic soils in habitats such as heathland, moorland and grazed upland pastures. Its leaves are blade-like and are very stiff and rigid. It produces lovely dark purple spikelets which are densely arranged along the leaves.
