Yellow Rattle
Rhinanthus minor
This annual wildflower is a crucial species for the establishment of wildflower meadows. It is hemi-parasitic, meaning it takes the nutrients from surrounding plants, namely grass. So, it reduces competition from grasses and allows other wildflowers to establish. It has distinct serrated leaves and two-lipped yellow flowers that emerge from a green, balloon-like calyx. Its seeds rattle within their pods, hence the common name.
