This slender and airy perennial grass is widespread throughout the UK and thrives in shadier habitats such as woodland rides and glades, hedgerows and parkland. It has soft, slender leaves and delicate wiry stems. It is not rhizomatous but can form spares clumps. Its flowers are dainty and develop from light green to purple.
