This downy perennial is slightly less aromatic than its favoured kitchen counterpart. It is found on drier spots such as hedgerows and field edges. Small, delicate pinkish flowers appear from protective hairy bracts from July till September. Similarly to other members of this family, it is well-loved by pollinators.
