Teasel

Dipsacus fullonum

A very tall, upright and spiky biennial that is commonly found on roadside verges, hedgerows, wasteland and some grassland. Its leaves grow opposite in pairs forming a small cup for water to gather, allowing it to gain nutrients from unlucky insects. Its soft purple flowers protrude from a spiky globular flowerhead. The seed is very popular amongst songbirds and especially goldfinches.
