This rhizomatous perennial rush is found growing in lightly saline conditions such as the upper regions of saltmarshes and spots where it is reached by the sea?s spray. It has also been sighted along roadsides that are spread with salt. It has narrow, dark green stems which support clusters of small and rounded dark brown to black flowers, for which it is easily distinguished.
